Six common myths about business coaching

Here’s a question for you.

If a coach doesn’t have a coach of their own, do they genuinely believe in the power of coaching?

In my opinion, we all need people around us to help us grow and develop; whether that’s a coach, a mentor, or a different kind of training and development support, we all need someone or something to help us grow, develop and evolve.

Over the years, business mentors and coaches have helped me immensely to grow my business, evolve as a leader and achieve many of my business goals.

I believe in the power of business coaching and leadership development…….I’ve experienced the results this kind of support can bring, and I’ve seen hundreds of times through our clients the transformation impact it can have on leaders and their businesses.

So why do so many business leaders still refuse to consider business and leadership coaching as an option?

There are many preconceived notions regarding business coaching & external business development & sales training, i.e. “Business coaching is a waste of money. I already know what’s wrong with my business. I don’t have time for this.”

“A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you always knew you could be.”

— Tom Landry (one of the most successful NFL coaches)

But if these beliefs are holding you back from getting an effective business coach or sales training, you’re missing a huge opportunity to improve your skills and your business’s performance.

Here are the most common myths (and, more importantly, the truths) about business coaching & sales & leadership development.

Myth No. 1

“Coaching is expensive, and I need to save money.”

The reality? Investing in support to help you run a more successful business will benefit you financially in the long term. Not only that, but most leaders can qualify for fully funded non-returnable & non-refundable funds to help you grow & develop your business.

FACT – not addressing the problems in your business will cost you more money than hiring a business coach ever will.

Myth No. 2

“I don’t have time for this. I’m too busy running my business.”

Most entrepreneurs or business owners spend their time fixing problems and fighting fires without being able to take a longer-term approach to their business growth. But, by not taking the time to get on top of fundamental challenges, the reality is that your problems will continue and probably get worse.

FACT – not making time to grow and develop your business now risks there not being a business for you to grow over the long term.

Myth No. 3

“I already know what’s wrong in my business.”

Those visible problems are usually symptoms of more significant issues that can only be identified through a careful, thorough assessment. A business coach will take a holistic view of your business, find the underlying cause of the problem and then coach you on how to fix it.

Fact: If you don’t treat the root cause of the problems in your business, the symptoms will keep returning.

Myth No. 4

“Coaching won’t change anything in my company.”

The reality is that nothing positive will change in your business unless you’re convinced of the benefits of the change and know how to make it happen. The right business coach can help you better understand your business and develop leadership skills. That will enable you to make changes that will positively impact your company’s performance.

Fact: Nothing changes if nothing changes…..if what you’ve been trying up until now isn’t working, maybe it’s time to try something different.

Myth No. 5

“I don’t need another advisor. I need someone to fix my problems.”

The reality is that coaching is a learning experience, providing you with vital tools and resources for the future of your business. The goal is to transfer knowledge and know‑how to you and your management team so you can thrive going forward.

Fact: Only you can do the work needed in your business. Business coaching & Leadership Development is about teaching you what you need to know to use those skills – we teach you how to fish, not do the fishing for you.

Myth No. 6

“My accountant and lawyer give me advice. Why should I pay someone else to do it?”

The reality is that, while accountants and lawyers are valuable advisors, our problems could be strategic, operational or HR related, so you likely need broader expertise than they can offer. An experienced business coach will look at your company as a whole to determine the cause of your challenges and help you learn to solve them.

FACT – Every part of your business needs to be nurtured – having a narrow focus could damage your long-term chances of success.

“Everyone needs a coach. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a basketball player, a tennis player, a gymnast or a business owner; coaching brings out the best in you.”

— Bill Gates (Microsoft)
